I had an entirely different experience when staying at Ambrosia Farms last fall. Not only was I taken by the very clean and indeed whimsical tents, but the air was fresh and the food was delicious. Nina and Gene were both gracious and welcoming. Finally, for the record, I had NO bugs in my bed area whatsoever.

While the Featherdown farm stays offer one type of farm experience, there are many other farms and ranches in the U.S. that accommodate guests in their houses, in cabins and guest cottages, and, yes, also in many variety of tent or yurt. Prices vary hugely and some are great for kids, while others aren't. We have just launched a new searchable website www.farmstayus.com cataloging all the farm and ranch stays in the U.S. that we can find. No matter what age your family, there's probably an appropriate farm stay out there just waiting for your call, even for families with small children. As a farm stay owner myself (Leaping Lamb Farm in OR), I have lots of families with kids under 3.
