Good Sweat
Is the tunic the new sweatshirt?
Walk into any New York City yoga studio and you’ll notice tunics hanging from the hooks instead of bulky sweatshirts. The new layering piece, which slips easily over slim-fitting yoga pants, is having its moment as New Yorkers get more serious about studio-to-street fashion and ditch the collegiate look and hoodie. (We expect a Bill Cunningham slideshow on the topic of tunics any minute now.)
“Maybe I’m kidding myself,” laughs Una Chae, a YogaWorks member and former fashion executive. “But with a tunic over my yoga pants, I actually feel polished and put-together.”
Feeling put-together is the point, says Jamie Hanna, the founder of Zobha activewear and an Ashtanga yoga teacher, who lives in her California-based company’s lounge wear. “On a typical day you’ll find me wearing the Annette Tunic over Zobha leggings with a pair of tall boots,” says Hanna. “This is my outfit for dropping the kids off at school to teaching a morning yoga class, to a day at the office and date night with my husband.”
You may not see many New Yorkers wearing their yoga pants to work and dinner yet—this isn’t Mill Valley, California, after all. But our fitness-fashion philosophy is definitely changing: No longer content with polar-opposite aesthetics—one set of style standards for the city and another for the yoga studio or gym—we’re looking for pieces that stylishly integrate these wardrobes. And the tunic is the fashion item bridging the gap.
Zobha, which is sold at Equinox gym’s retail stores in New York City and several yoga studios, is leading the tunic trend with four pieces in the fall-to-winter collection. The Annette Tunic (pictured above, $90), made from a renewable wood fiber called Tencel, has a groovy, off-the-shoulder asymmetrical collar and falls below the hip. The Lounge Wrap ($150), made of organic cotton French terry, hits just above the knee and has a flattering open neckline. There’s also a Shawl Collar Pullover ($84) and Scoop Neck Tunic ($64).
Of course, these long lean tops cover your butt, a boon once you’re outside the studio. But the tunic, by creating a stylish look around your workout clothes, also covers your fashion cred.

Get up early and take a long bike ride in the forest preserve to enjoy this beautiful fall. Then come home to the newspaper, coffee and look forward to the Bears.
My ideal Sunday would actually be on a Saturday, as it would need to include the Union Square greenmarket: Saturday Vinyasa yoga class at The Yoga Room in Astoria (a favorite yoga class), a light brunch (maybe a spinach salad with goat cheese and, since I can’t resist sweets, roasted pears), and then a trip to the Union Square Greenmarket. Even if I don’t buy anything, I enjoy the people-watching, the fresh food all around me, and the beautiful colors of all the fruits, veggies and flowers! All of this makes me so happy and feel so lucky!!
favorite is Core Strength Vinyasa w/ Sadie Nardini and post work is having some coffee with friends. not good for prana, but good for the soul ;-)
Pedicure in the massage chair … perfect for post-workout bliss.
I am lucky enough to live between the Appalachian Trail and the Catoctin Mountain Trail system so my favorite workout this time of year is a long hike. Post hike activities usually include some variation of pancakes and maple syrup.
Early morning yoga class right across the street (Park Slope Yoga Center in Brooklyn), then out to brunch with my beautiful daughter and handsome husband! Walk in the park with the dog somewhere in there too.
Anything after yoga is awesome so long as I get to have my favorite GT’s Kombucha / Synergy. Ideally, a hike in Boulder, CO, but since I live in NYC, the rambles in Central Park work nicely as well. Literally can get lost there for hours!
A nice long Vinyasa flow session, then a brisk park walk in the beautiful fall air…and if I’m lucky, some warm whole wheat pancakes!
my favourite workout is a long and luxurious swim, followed by 10 minutes in the steam room. then i love to walk home from the pool, stop for a coffee and sit down with a magazine.
My favorite sunday is a 90 minuste Anusara class, followed by a long walk on the beach with my dog, then a healthy meal for an early supper, lastly early to bed!
My ideal Sunday would first be a cool Sunday in the middle of October. It would involve a good Vinyasa or an Ashtanga class to wake me up and get me going. After, I would get a refreshing lunch at my favorite cafe on their patio, and then spend the rest of the day outside enjoying the beautiful weather. That would be all I need for a perfect Sunday (or any day!).
i LOVE tunics! So comfy and still look nice enough to wear out. My favorite workout is (obviously) Core Fusion and after I’d love to go have a relaxing outdoor brunch on a sunny summer day.
My ideal Sunday would start with a loop of
Prospect Park followed by a Vinyasa class. After, I have the best reasons to try out a new place for brunch!
my favorite workout is yoga! but on sundays i love bike rides along the west side highway and over a bridge (Brooklyn, Williamsburg, Manhattan or even GW) followed by a good meal shared with loved ones and friends :)
I am always inspired by a great ride at soul-cycle with my closest girlfriends followed by some girl time bonding and brunching at the diner down the street. Who could ask for a healthier way to start the day than some exercise, inspiration, and time with the people in life that matter the most?
Oooh, I love a noon hot yoga class (not a morning person here!) followed by a smoothie and then some QT with my cuties, preferably outdoors!!
On Sundays my husband watches our young son so I can attend an Iyengar yoga class. I can rejoin my family afterward calm and refreshed.
so.. it starts with sleeping in till 9. leisurely getting dressed (in a tunic and yoga pants, naturally) grabbing the weekend times and heading to the bagel shop to with my boyfriend to read, eat and relax without a blackberry. then head to the farmer’s market, drop the goods off at home before heading off to practice at kula. a quick glance in the mirror and change of clothes (back to the tunic!) sends me out the door to go teach. leisurely returning home for more reading, couch lounging with cats, and hopefully dinner with friends at the neighborhood joint down the block. :)
My ideal Sunday starts off with a Core Fusion workout. I’m energized and ready to spend the rest of the day with my husband, chasing our daughter around the playground!
Power yoga with Sherman Morris is my weekend ritual. I sweat until there’s no toxic residue left over from the week past, and then, after a quick, very hot shower, I put on floaty, comfortable, still chic clothes and stroll up to Peacefood Cafe for a healthy, satisfying lunch of soup and chickpea fries…. maybe even a bit of vegan tiramisu for dessert. While I eat, I read my Kindle — pleasure reading only. That is a perfect Sunday. The Zobha tunic would fit right in.
My ideal Sunday involves a delicious Vinyasa Flow class, maybe a restorative class afterwards to wind down, and a late brunch at a healthy and filling restaurant like Souen!
My favorite workout is a class by any teacher at Yoga High, taking the long way home to window shop in my ‘hood (EV/LES), then settling in for a long hot soak with an iced tea, a Lush bath bomb and a good magazine…my kitty relaxing just out of arm’s reach from the tub, of course.
A morning vinyasa yoga class at the Shala, followed by as much outside time as weather permits, a pedicure at Jin Soon, and maybe eventually some resveratrol-rich wine.
I love Ruth’s hour-long spinning class on Sunday mornings! I walk home dreaming of an everything bagel from Absolute with lox, cream cheese, and tomato. Then guilt takes over, and I have a bowl of oatmeal. I am still a hoodie wearer and would love this tunic. I could be your walking advertisement on the Upper West Side!
A great spin class followed by lunch with my best friends at Atlantic Grill and then some leisurely window shopping and perhaps finishing the afternoon with a manicure. I LOVE this tunic!!
My ideal Sunday routine includes getting up for an early yoga class at the yoga studio down the street from me in Astoria. I love stretching and smelling the fall leaves on the walk. Once class is over, I return to my apartment for my boyfriend, and we take a walk to Starbucks for pumpkin lattes and then to the bagel shop for delicious toasted bagels. Reading and relaxing for the rest of the day follows. I really can’t ask for more than that, and I look forward to Sundays all week!
A perfect sunday: hang out in bed with my husband and my dog until the spirit moves us to get out….ride our bikes up Westside water front (dog in basket), cook something delicious and take a late afternoon YBR class with Scott!
Sunday is a sleep in day for most, not for me..Living on Long Island with two small boys and a husband who like to slumber ’til 9:00am (yes!) I take the opportunity to create a Sunday morning ritual..I rise just before 6am while it is still dark, rub some lavender/patchoulli on my neck and shoulders and head down stairs to the quiet stillness of my basement (I have set up a small area that I have a shrine and my mat)..I light a candle & incense and breathe in the glory that is a Sunday Morning. God’s Day, and that light of the Divine is within me and I meditate on this feeling of gratitude…I start out with simple warming stretches and move into my asanas with grace and strength…I do not look at a clock but instead seek to find the sun through my window..at the end I turn towards the sun and sit in meditation for a while~somedays the sunlight lights up my face, other days when the sky is gray it calms me inside just the same…After my practice I love to tip toe up the stairs to my kitchen..I make a fresh pot of Stumptown roast as I kneel down to kiss my puppy good morning. I sip a mug as I take him for his morning walk and the spirit of my morning lives within me as I spend time with my dog outdoors..when we return, no matter how hard I try to keep him quiet (not too hard) he barks and plays and eventually little sleepy boys make their way into my arms for morning hugs and eventually a big hot home made breakfast together…There are days this plan does not work (for instance if one of my children or myself/husband is under the weather-) but for the most part this is the sweetest ritual I have…It is very special to me.
My ideal workout is a long hike on a fall day, followed by a massage, lilac aromatherapy and a vegan feast, homemade.
My ideal workout would be a vigorous fall hike, followed by a massage, lilac aromatherapy and a vegan feast, homemade.
Running and pilates for sure and after a foot massage and pedicure.
Being the mom of two small children it is hard to find time to fit in yoga. Luckily I live close to a wonderful yoga studio in Park Slope (Bend and Bloom) and I try to make it to a morning class on the weekends. We try to let Daddy sleep in while I change into my yoga clothes — this tunic would be perfect for our walk to the bagel store and run-ins with neighbors — following our bagels we head home, wake up Daddy and then I slip out for yoga. Leaving yoga in a blissed out state I head back to our house to hit a birthday party or soccer game. Again, having this tunic would give me the style I need to make it through the day and carry my yoga vibe!
My ideal Sunday would be a double whammy – an early morning sweaty spin at soul cycle followed by a great stretch and strength builder vinyasa class at sonic.. Afterwards, I’d grab a nice hot shower and an extra large cup of coffee, and then head to the park for some tumbling and swinging with my toddler – til naptime!
My ideal work out would be a bike ride either to yoga, or stationary at the gym before yoga. . and then a great yoga class (preferable anusara), and then ample time in the steamroom and shower. Then I’d like to calorically ruin all the good work by Sunday brunch with friends and a long walk somewhere around the city. Okay that’s one of them I probably have 10 favorite varieties of this!
My perfect Saturday, starts with Brooklyn Bridge Boot Camp. I love starting the weekend running across the Brooklyn Bridge with Ariane and see the beautiful city from that vantage, reminding me to fully appreciate the glorious city. Then after, I head directly to Union Square to get yummy coffee and go to the Farmers market where I load up on veggies for the week. And after that it is off to home, where I clean up, meet up with the fella and head out to the Brooklyn Flea.
It is a lovely way to spend the day….
I live in northern Manhattan and love to keep it local on Sundays. The perfect morning would include yoga at one of our local studios (depending on my mood, either Bikram or vinyasa) followed by a pedicure and brunch with some of the wonderful girl friends I’ve made in the neighborhood. It’s a terrific community and Sunday is a good day to celebrate it.
The contest is now closed. Thank you all of your wonderful answers that evoke the best of NYC weekends. And CONGRATULATIONS to our five winners–Maria, Beth, Rose, Melanies, and Jode!! We will contact you via the e-mail addresses you provided for your size and shipping information.
Nothing beats a long run followed by brunch with friends. Mimosas are a must, and there better be some good gossip involved.
I am very interesting in yoga pants,I think there are many good and beautiful pants, but in my opinion, organic yoga pants is the best choose.
Howdy just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The text in your post seem to be running off the screen in Ie. I’m not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with internet browser compatibility but I figured I’d post to let you know. The design look great though! Hope you get the issue solved soon. Cheers
