Why Chia seeds are the superfood du jour
In 2008, Dr. Oz praised Chia seeds as anti-aging agents. And this past fall he listed them as one of his top four brain foods, so it’s no surprise that they’ve joined the ranks of goji and açai berries as nutritionally dense superfoods.
The buzz seems to be well deserved—just two tablespoons of Chia seeds have more antioxidants than blueberries and more omega-3s and protein than flax, according to registered dietitian Christian Henderson of Pure Nutrition. Plus, the slowly metabolized carbs in the fiber-rich Chia seed can help to curb appetite, says as Organic Avenue founder Denise Mari, whose stores sell a popular (and super tasty) Chia Tapioca Pudding dessert and other Chia snacks online.
Chia seeds are also incredibly simple to add into your diet. They can be purchased whole or ground at most organic grocers and then sprinkled over your favorite dish or blended in smoothies.
Mari also suggests using them to create this healthy, delectable, and incredibly easy dessert. It’s a slightly different take on Organic Avenue’s popular tapioca version. —Danielle E. Alvarez

YUM! I love Chia Seeds! They are really pricey though. Do you have any recommended brands for Chia Seeds? My local Organic Grocer wants 18$ for a very tiny bag.
