7 celebs who buck beauty trends
We all know the look du jour in celebrity-land: wrinkle-free, poreless skin and whippet thin. But hark! There’s hope for Tinsel Town yet. A handful of starlets go their own way, bucking the beauty trends of their peers. Here are our favorite beauty iconoclasts in the biz.
1. Christina Hendricks: Won’t cave on curves
Truth be told, if there were an overall beauty iconoclast award, we’d be tempted to give it to this pale, buxom beauty and star of “Mad Men.”
But if we had to pick one favorite attribute, we dig her for famously embracing her non-size-0 shape.
“The first time I went to Italy…I gained 15 pounds,” she told Health. “I would take my clothes off in front of the mirror and be like, ‘Oh, I look like a woman.’ And I felt beautiful.”
2. Jennifer Garner: Rocks the everyday wear
We know they’re under ridiculous pressure, being photographed 24/7 and all. But we can’t help feel it’s absurd how decked-out celebs are at, like, the gas station.
Which is why we love Garner for letting herself look like, well, who she is—an incredibly busy (and uber-successful) mom, who has better things to do than primp all morning and who can’t take care of all the things she needs to if she’s wearing a pair of seven-inch heels.
3. Kirsten Dunst: Keeping her own chompers
Okay, it’s a sad day when not getting veneers warrants applause. But there you have it. Golf claps for Dunst, who’s taken a implicit stand against opting for cosmetic dentistry, preferring her own (ever-so-slightly wonky) teeth. “That’s one of the things I like about me,” she told InStyle. “Messed-up teeth are so sexy.”
4. Annette Benning: Embracing wrinkles with radiance
We have such a girl crush on Benning who was cast in her Oscar-nominated role in “The Kids Are All Right,” partly because she was vanity-free and willing to look her age (52). “We never had a wrinkle conversation,” the film’s director told The Wrap. “I just said, ‘I want the make-up to be super-modest,’ and that was the end of it.
5. Oh, and a runner-up? Julia Roberts, who famously told Good Morning America that she’s totally anti-Botox. “Your face tells a story,” Roberts said. ”And it shouldn’t be a story about your drive to the doctor’s office.”
6. Gisele Bundchen: Natural product promoter
The Brazilian bombshell took a whole lotta flack recently for calling sunscreen “poison“—a statement she later clarified, saying she really just prefers all-natural options.
Controversy aside, we applaud the supermodel’s outspokenness when it comes to opting for natural skin-care products and makeup, like when she chose all-natural RMS cosmetics for a recent H&M campaign shoot.
The exquisite, fair-skinned actress told People magazine that accepting her paleness was actually a challenge, particularly growing up in Australia.
“I always bemoaned the fact that I wasn’t a bronzed surfer chick. I’ve had to accept the fact that I’m pale.”
Good thing. With her creamy, spray-tan-free skin, we think she’s one of the most stunning actresses out there. —Catherine Pearson
