Refrigerator Look Book: Jessica Bellofatto

Jessica BellofattoJessica Bellofatto impresses the heck out of us—and the women’s performance-wear company Athleta, which named her a 2011 Featured Athlete. Bellofatto is the founder and director of KamaDeva Yoga in East Hampton—and a triathlete, a stand-up paddleboarder, a dancer, and a soon-to-be cycling coach. Oh yeah, she’s also a certified doula and a mom.

You’d think she’d be on a constant protein quest. But thankfully, her boyfriend, Adam Kelinson, is a chef and the founder of Organic Performance, a company that creates healthy, organic foods to fuel athletes. With his help, her fridge is somehow able to keep up with her. Here’s what’s in it:

I’m so impressed by all of the jars! Did you do all of that canning on your own?
My boyfriend guides me through the process. It’s so much fun to do together. They’re a combination of raw and lacto-fermented foods, like sauerkraut, kimchi, pickles, tomatillo hot sauce. We also can items like heirloom tomato sauce and salsa verde. The best thing about it all is that it comes straight from our garden!

What’s the bee pollen for? How do you eat it?
Bee pollen is a great source of protein and B vitamins. I use it in my morning and pre-training smoothies. It’s all part of the approach that I take towards my nutrition.

How about the miso? Do you cook with it?
Miso soup is one of my favorites, and it’s so easy to make. It’s great for helping the body eliminate toxins and is an excellent source of protein and minerals. It’s another fermented food I always incorporate in my diet to help balance out the physical stress I put on my body.

As a doula, do you give moms-to-be advice on what to eat during pregnancy?
I consider pregnant women to be athletes. Ask anyone to carry around a frontal backpack for 40 weeks and see how they feel. Pre-natal nutrition is crucial to the health of mom and infant, but it can be a sensitive subject, so I only provide it if asked.

I have to ask about the beer. Are you afraid other yogis will consider your libation-stocked fridge sacrilegious?
Ha! As a yogi I can’t live my life in fear of what others might think. Beer is a great post-workout recovery beverage, and all of the beer you see here is actually organic and vegan, so it fits in perfectly with my overall lifestyle. —Lisa Elaine Held
