With a new Physique 57, the UWS flexes some serious fitness muscle
Physique 57, the popular barre workout, just announced the opening of a third Manhattan studio on August 16. Time to grab your nubby socks, Upper West Siders.
The neighborhood once synonymous with cheese and carbs—think Zabar’s, Fairway, and H & H bagels—has been colonized by Luon-wearing spinners and yogis. And with Physique 57 opening in the Ansonia Building, the Upper West Side is flexing some serious fitness muscle.
Pure Yoga planted its mat at Amsterdam and 77th and is home to Figure 4, their in-house barre workout created by Physique alum Kate Albarelli.
Equinox sits just across the street, and a new super-sized SoulCycle will soon be just a stone’s throw from Soul Cycle’s original UWS location.
Then there are popular indies like the Nalini Method (also a barre workout) and Uptown Pilates. As well as stalwarts like Reebok Sports Club/NY.
The neighborhood’s fitness fashion was once dominated by the Lincoln Center Lululemon, but on August 10 Athleta will open a splashy flagship at Columbus and 70th (where Lucky Brand was).
Physique’s new 3,500-square foot space, with two studios, will be located in the historic Ansonia—the Beaux-Arts building on Broadway and 74th that’s housed everyone from Babe Ruth to Bette Midler (who FYI started her singing career at the Continental Baths, a gay bathhouse located in the Ansonia).
“The seams are bursting in our Midtown and Soho studios!” explains Physique 57’s founder and owner, Jennifer Vaughan Maanavi. The neighborhood’s come a long way since the cast of Seinfeld sat around at the diner. “The Upper West Side is a fitness mecca,” gushes Maanavi. —Alexia Brue

Smart move. The only real barre class up there is Figure 4, but you have to have a yoga membership for that. This will be a great option for people who want just barre.
