Study shows dark chocolate may help with weight loss
Just in case you need another reason to eat chocolate, a new preliminary but very encouraging study suggests your daily sweet-tooth fix may not be as indulgent as you think!
The study, published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, shows that the compounds found in chocolate may help you shed pounds. We’ve heard about the powerful disease-fighting antioxidants in chocolate, but this is the first evidence that the polyphenols (that’s the good stuff) in chocolate actually inhibit the key enzymes required to digest carbs and fats, explain the authors.
The same compounds also promote a healthy metabolism—but make sure you go dark. Compared to milk chocolate eaters, those who down dark chocolate eat 15 percent fewer calories, and report feeling fewer cravings for sweet, salty, and fatty foods.
Emerging research also suggests the benefits of chocolate go far beyond helping you drop a few pounds.

1. It protects your heart: The flavonoids in chocolate prevent clogged arteries by reducing blood pressure, increasing HDL cholesterol (the good stuff) and decreasing LDL cholesterol (the bad stuff). But that isn’t a license to gobble down your favorite supersized chocolate bar. Studies show that just 1.6 ounces (about 240 calories) may be enough. “Look for chocolate with at least 65 percent cocoa—the darker it is, the more flavonoids it contains,” says Roberta Anding, R.D., a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association.
