Adidas launches Grete Waitz-inspired Marathon kicks

Adidas Grete Waitz

Adidas' Grete Waitz-inspired Supernova Glide 4

While renown public figures get a library or airport named for them, athletes often get a shoe.

Adidas’ is launching these Grete Waitz-inspired running sneakers, just in time for the 2011 ING New York City Marathon.

Waitz, who died of cancer this past April, won nine New York City marathons between 1978 and 1988, more than any other runner in history.

The sneaks, in three variations of red, white, and blue, pay tribute to Waitz’s Norwegian heritage.

And while that combination of colors often results in a tacky mess, Adidas executed the design perfectly, resulting in a trio of modern, sporty-chic options (one of which is patterned with her marathon times).

The running shoes also come with a mega-dose of inspiration—100 percent (yes, that’s all) of the profits will be donated to Waitz’s AKTIV Against Cancer foundation.

$110-115, Adidas Sport Performance Store, 610 Broadway at Houston, Soho, and at Adidas’ marathon booth on November 6. www.adidas.com
