91-year-old awarded new Guinness World Record for oldest yoga teacher

Bernice (Bernie) Bates, a 91-year-old who started teaching yoga in 1960, was given the Guinness World Record for the Oldest Yoga Instructor in the world last week as part of Guinness World Records Day.

After 50 years of demonstrating downward dogs, Bernie still teaches yoga to the residents of her retirement community.

We’re wondering if Bernie has met Tao Porchon-Lynch, the 93-year-old Grand Master yogi who just taught a workshop at Strala Yoga this past weekend (and will be at Kripalu in December).

Yes, technically Lynch is older, but apparently being awarded the record has more to do with submitting paperwork than with actually being the oldest in the world.

After 70 years of yoga practice, we sincerely doubt Lynch is holding a grudge. Instead, the two should team up for the ultimate coming together of accumulated yogic wisdom. We’d sign up for that class.
