Oil pulling: How to do the mouth-washing detox rinse

Coconut oil mouth detox rinseIn Ayurvedic medicine, sesame oil is the solution of choice for this mouthwash detox method that’s reemerging in New York City wellness circles for its health and beauty perks.

But for a less pungent and decidedly more palatable experience, try a tablespoon of coconut oil. Spectrum’s Organic Unrefined Coconut Oil ($7.99) is an organic option with a nice flavor. (And it’s great in cooking and baking, too.)

Swish it in your mouth for about 10 minutes, working your way up to 15 or 20 minutes, once a day. Focus on pulling, pushing, and drawing it through your teeth without swallowing it. Then spit it out.

Proponents says that rinsing before breakfast, on an empty stomach, produces the best detox results.

And it might go without saying, but brush your teeth per usual after you’re done. Prolonged contact can cause tooth decay. —Jennifer Kass
