Class Action: BariMACRO at Bari Studio
Fitness classes follow fashion. The city’s gyms and studios constantly launch new “It” classes. In Class Action we dish on what we’re trying, or what we really want to. And please tell us what classes you’re excited about in the Comments section, below!
When Bari Studio opened a year ago, we were the first ones through the door to test out the studio’s barre-cardio-sculpting method. Since then, founder Alexandra Perez has totally switched gears and created an almost entirely different approach (and designated the space “members only”). We stopped by to evaluate the changes.
The method is offered in different iterations with varying amounts of cardio and sculpting. I took “BariMACRO,” the signature class which balances the two elements evenly, with instructor Melinda Hall.
As far as first impressions go, Bari’s new method felt like a Tracy Anderson knock-off (and it makes sense since Perez brought on Brice Andrew Hall, a former Anderson minion, to develop it with her).
The class started off with a high-intensity cardio dance sequence. It was tricky to follow for a first-timer, and Hall made few moves to offer guidance. She primarily focused on her own reflection in the mirror and rarely offered commands or counts. (A caveat: Normal first-time clients have to take an intro class first.) The cardio was followed by intense sculpting moves on the mat and lifting three-pound weights to the music.
I loved that the class was high-energy and difficult (and the studio may be the coolest designed boutique fitness space in the city), but it didn’t offer anything a run-of-the-mill dance workout wouldn’t, and the lack of cues and correction was a huge downer. —Lisa Elaine Held
Who’s it for? Tracy Anderson lovers who can’t afford her hefty price tag.

Totally agree with your assessment….I went regularly for a while and still couldn’t follow all the moves. It became very frustrating and discouraging and I felt that it took away from my workout.
I disagree with it being a “knock off” of tracy anderson. As I’ve tried both methods, I can say that Bari is completely different and incorporates far more stretching and strengthening of the body. I’ve seen an enormous difference in my body and have become much leaner while still keeping and increasing my strength. Bari is in a league all it’s own.
