hi, i popped out / pulled/ strained etc ribs in yoga about 10 odd years ago. for bodies that are loose jointed and overly flexible it is easy to over stretch in positions and not realize that you are over stretching until POP! and there you have it. mindfulness and knowledge of your own body type is key and takes time/education to learn.

Hi Havah,
I work with primarilly dancers, performers, yoga enthusiasts, etc. I literally see at least a dozen cases per week with this type of subluxation. It is very common for active people. Too bad the hospital didn't refer you to a chiropractor immediately!

I'm glad it resolved for you.

I think this kind of thing happens with all people who are active athletes. I did it once while training for a marathon. At the time I couldn't figure out why it happened, but then a friend reminded me of the increases going on in my chest cavity to accommodate my increased air exchange. Made sense then & reading this nice little article, it makes sense now too.

When my rib came out, I thought I was having a heart attack. I went to the hospital with a pain that felt like I was being stabbed through my back in the heart. After all the tests, and a whopping hospital bill, I was told I was just fine and to go home. Still hurting, I went to see my husbands chiropractor, apparently my rib had slid off it's supporting notch in the back The chiropractor put it back in place in under a second, the pain simply went away. He said it was very common for ribs to shift and move.

Interesting. I did this once but wasn't sure if it was from yoga or not. I had gotten a particularly intense adjustment from a teacher during a standing twist and went really deep into it. The following day, as fate would have it, I tripped and fell at home. I didn't remember hurting my ribs when I fell, but always assumed it was that that hurt me, not the adjustment. My acupuncturist thought it was from yoga, though, and reading this, now I think so too. Oh well. I got better and I'm more careful now.
