With Freshology, Jillian Michaels digs into the food delivery business
Jillian Michaels has proven herself a dynamic fitness and wellness entrepreneur since she sprinted onto the scene as a Biggest Loser coach in 2004.
Since then she’s become a household name, even among people who don’t care about BMI and “getting shredded.” Michaels is a brand extension genius with a steady stream of books, DVDs, video games, and supplements. But no foray into food—until now.
Last week she launched Freshology Gold with Jillian Michaels. Freshology uses recipes from Michaels’ book Master Your Metabolism and Fed-Exes the 1,400-calorie per day meals to your doorstep from its Los Angeles kitchen.
Intrigued by her foray into the meal delivery space, we ordered up a three-day plan. Most people commit for longer. In fact, the 28 day plan doesn’t repeat a single meal.
We dish on our dining experience:
PROS
+ Attractive meals: Plastic airplane packaging aside, the food is beautifully presented. Colorful, varied meals come with lots of veggies, fruits, grains, and lean meats.
+ Lots of ingredients: The meals contain things few people would make on their own. Eggs over a bed of spinach (I don’t get that ambitious in the morning, do you?). Vietnamese Noodle Bowl with Shiitake mushrooms, edamame, and ginger ponzu. (I’d never make this and Pret a Manger certainly doesn’t.)
+ Nutritional breakdown for each meal: The box of food came with print outs of the nutritional facts for each meal. (Many other meal services merely give you calories per day and no other data). I liked knowing that the peppered flat iron steak with barley, roasted tomato, and asparagus (360 calories) was less than my lunch that day, which was chicken salad with red grapes and walnuts (440 calories).
+ Friendly, responsive customer service. A Freshology rep called me to discuss dietary aversions. So if you don’t like certain proteins, they will customize accordingly.
CONS
- Freshology is a misnomer: The meals arrive via 2-day Fed-Ex from the company’s California kitchen. So the meals that arrived at my building at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday had been prepared in L.A. on Monday.
- Mid-day delivery: Having three days of meals arrive mid-day is inconvenient. I was eager to start my meal plan Wednesday morning, but the mid-day delivery means that I couldn’t dig in until dinner. New York City-based meal-plan companies deliver early, so you can start when you wake up.
- No snacks: Most meal plans on the market come with two snacks, so you’re not given any opportunity to stray. Freshology Gold provides snacking tips, which for me translated into opportunity to cheat.
- Expensive: At $47.95 per day, plus a hefty delivery charge for New Yorkers, it’s much more expensive than comparable meals plans, like Zone Manhattan, which is $37.95 per day.
THE TAKEAWAY
Without a New York City kitchen, the Freshology Gold meals are already two days old by the time you unpack them into your refrigerator. We’ll happily tuck in again when the name rings true. —Alexia Brue

I’d rather go with a largely plant based diet than a Jillian Michaels brand of Nutri-System.

Very disappointed in the food web sight for Jillian’s diet plan. The cost is expensive and is not affordable to the average person. It would be nice if her diet plan was cost effective for the working person that doesn’t have time to do all the cooking. I just started the 90 day revolution and would love if I could go buy food like Healthy Choice, but with Jillian’s meal choices.
