Class Action: Barre Blast-Pilates at The Yoga Room
Fitness classes follow fashion. The city’s gyms and studios constantly launch new “It” classes. In Class Action we dish on what we’re trying, or what we really want to. And please tell us what classes you’re excited about in the Comments section, below!
This non-yoga offering at The Yoga Room in Queens has the word “barre” in it, but the tiny, targeted pulses and Lotte Berk-lengtheners are paired with moderate-intensity cardio and strength training.
So, in between familiar barre sequences, like squats on your tip-toes and with one leg extended, which make butt, thighs, and quad muscles quiver, are jumping jacks, mountain climbers, forearm planks, and push-ups.
Then, you finish it off with a Pilates-style core workout on the mat, with traditional exercises like the Teaser and Hundreds. Hannah, who taught the class, made me sweat way more than I expected her to, and her fun-loving approach to both the class and her playlist was much appreciated.
My only complaint: Because the Astoria location didn’t have enough room at the barre for all the students, I got stuck with a stand-up plastic one that was sticky to the touch and wobbled while I squeezed my glutes. Here’s hoping that with this sign of class popularity, they’ll add another one to the wall. —Lisa Elaine Held
