Class Action: YogaVida’s 50/50 Community Class
Fitness classes follow fashion. The city’s gyms and studios constantly launch new “It” classes. In Class Action we dish on what we’re trying, or what we really want to. And please tell us what classes you’re excited about in the Comments section, below!
Yoga Vida is a go-to spot for simple, affordable, quality yoga classes. And its Community Classes, which were just introduced this year, are the studio’s version of a medical school clinical—a place where teachers-in-training and the just-graduated hone their skills. Classes are donation-based, and 50 percent of the proceeds benefit Every Mother Counts, Christy Turlington Burn’s nonprofit.
And they’re really popular: a second class was just added to meet demand.
Community Classes follow Yoga Vida’s signature athletic Vinyasa style, with lots of chaturangas and no chanting. And while you won’t be practicing with the studio’s headliners (such as Mrs. Hilaria Thomas Baldwin), the teaching newbies tend to be careful, cautious, and exacting about their instruction.
Our instructor, CJ, cued the class gracefully, just without the creativity and supreme confidence of a more seasoned teacher. She offered gentle, focused adjustments and clear, succinct spiritual guidance that we could see the NYU students that frequent the studio applying to their daily lives.
Who’s it for: College students and young 20-somethings; those pinching their pennies.

CJ is awesome, I love her class!
This is great! Thanks for sharing – important cause, and two community classes a day makes it so accessible.
I get confused with the name. Whether Vida( if it is Indian origin)means vidya( education or knowledge) or vidhi(tradition), I can’t understand. Please correct me.
Thanks.
