Class Action: AntiGravity Fundamentals at Om Factory Flight School
Fitness classes follow fashion. The city’s gyms and studios constantly launch new “It” classes. In Class Action we dish on what we’re trying, or what we really want to. And please tell us what classes you’re excited about in the Comments section, below!
Om Factory opened its flight-focused second location—featuring AntiGravity Yoga and AcroYoga—just north of Union Square this May. The space is open and airy, with giant picture windows in both practice rooms flooding the studio with light. Bright orange hammocks hanging from high ceilings beckon you off the ground as soon as you enter.
Since we’re flying novices with just a few classes under our belts, we tried AntiGravity Yoga Fundamentals with Lorraine Major. (It’s actually spelled FUNdamentals on the schedule.) The 75-minute class consisted of a few upside-down hangs, some swinging, and bouts of hammock-assisted core work and stretching.
Hammock moves are not necessarily intuitive, and in a class with a serious learning curve, Major was skilled at cueing accurately—and quickly enough to keep the class moving. She also has a great sense of humor, which you really need when your arms are tangled in satin and you’re trying to flip over for the supported inversions and “anti-gravity” benefits everyone talks about. (Dizziness?)
Swinging upside down “gets better as you do it,” instructors say, though it’s a pretty unpleasant experience when you start. I alternated between uncomfortable light-headedness and wincing at the pain of the hammock digging into my back and thighs. And it’s not really a workout at this beginner stage, either.
I did, however, leave feeling like I was standing straighter than ever—like someone had stretched me out, pulled my shoulders back, and moved my body into perfect alignment. —Lisa Elaine Held
Who’s it for: Yogis looking to shake up their routine, those who love the childhood feeling of hanging upside down, people looking to perfect their posture, or who love the feeling of being stretched out a la Thai massage.

I looked into Om Factory and all the “Anti-Gravity” classes have been totally removed from the schedule at both locations starting in August. I called to find out why and the girl at the desk said she didn’t know. It seems a little strange, doesn’t it?
Woah! Thanks for letting us know, Myrna. We’ll look into it.
