Class Action: Drenched at 24-Hour Fitness
Fitness classes follow fashion. The city’s gyms and studios constantly launch new “It” classes. In Class Action we dish on what we’re trying, or what we really want to. And please tell us what classes you’re excited about in the Comments section, below!
Keoni Hudoba is a Barry’s Bootcamp favorite where his classes are perennially packed. The fitness god also commands a serious following for the class he created called Drenched, which is offered exclusively at 24 Hour Fitness (53rd and Lexington location).
It’s a soak-through-your-tank-top combination of strength, speed, plyometrics, and martial arts-esque sequences that he claims is “not for the faint at heart.” It isn’t.
Drenched starts with a series of cardio drills: jumping jacks, skip hops, and jumping lunges, all set to a dance club playlist that gratefully helps you get through the rest of the series.
From there, class moves into several martial arts-inspired sequences that includes kicks, squats, and reverse jumps set at a quick pace to keep your heart rate elevated. It wasn’t tough to follow the choreography, just tough in general.
The final act is a grueling round of pushups, planks, and mountain climbers made more difficult by the pools of sweat on the floor. Yours and your neighbors.
The uplifting vibe and killer workout make this class a blast, but Keoni himself is the real draw. His personalized encouragement and larger-than-life energy got me through the last few sets of pushups. And although he threatened to restart the count if anyone stopped, I didn’t silently hate him. In fact, the class seemed to love him for it all the more. —Rosa Levitan
