Wellness Weekend Escape: Breathe Inn, Lanesville, New York

breathe inn, lanesville, ny

Breathe Inn is both the hippest and the healthiest B&B around. Owners Camilla Ehlke and Marlon Aitcheson have serious downtown cred—she’s the founder of Triple Five Soul, and he’s a private chef whose clients have included Russell Simmons—and didn’t ditch their urban sensibility when they moved to Greene County.

They’ve given their 1866 Victorian house a modern, cosmopolitan spin, with white walls, Shaker-style furniture, and Moroccan textiles and tiles. Its seven bedrooms range from small artist-designed studios with shared bathrooms to the house-like Skylight Suite, which has its own private entrance and sundeck.

Breakfast is purely healthy and purely vegetarian (and can be vegan or otherwise altered). And purely delicious—Aitcheson has won over even the most devoted carnivores with his savory tofu scramble.

There’s a spacious yoga room with mats and props, where you can do your own practice or Camella will arrange for an instructor—or teach class herself. They court retreats, too, but even when there’s not one going on, you’re likely to meet like-minded guests. Our breakfast companions included a Brooklyn acupuncturist-Pilates teacher and her kombucha-brewing boyfriend who gladly shared his supply.

Top three memorable—and healthy—experiences at Breathe Inn:

1. Breakfast

The all-natural menu (much of which comes from their own garden) might include frittata with roasted shiitakes and sweet potato, mesclun salad with berries and avocado, and antioxidant juice of red grapes, ginger, and apple. It’s all beautifully presented, and served with a side of friendly conversation.

2. Activity-Central Location

The inn is ten minutes from Hunter Mountain and surrounded by top-notch hiking trails, as well as places for swimming, kayaking, and horseback riding in season. An avid road biker, Marlon has a great relationship with a bike shop in nearby Woodstock and can arrange for bikes to be delivered for guests—serious riders only, as the terrain is hilly. “We’ve had triathletes stay here and be really happy,” says
Camilla.

3. Breathing Room

The name isn’t just marketing. The tranquility here is palpable, whether in the yoga room, the glorious solarium, or by the outdoor pool. Inside is full of cozy nooks with big windows overlooking nature, and chill-out inducing H. Gillerman Organics aromatherapy oils are stocked. This is a place to exhale. —Ann Abel
