Class Action: Band Re-Design at Tracy Anderson

Fitness classes follow fashion. The city’s gyms and studios constantly launch new “It” classes. In Class Action we dish on what we’re trying, or what we really want to. And please tell us what classes you’re excited about in the Comments section, below!

Tracy Anderson Bands class

Love her or hate her (and we happen to love her), there’s no denying that Tracy Anderson is a fitness pioneer.

In Band Re-Design, an Anderson Method innovation, a rainbow of resistance bands that hang across the ceiling become your tools for serious toning. You pull down the bands that correspond to your strength and fitness level (there are three levels, and you can you hold more than one band at a time if you’re a bad ass), and the workout starts.

Imagine a blend of Pilates mat moves done dynamically with the strength-building bonus of the resistance bands. You’re on your feet, you’re on your knees, you’re moving as a group, glamorously tethered to the bands like fitness marionettes.

It’s an insane workout for the arms, which we’d expected. But what we didn’t anticipate was how many ways we tangled ourselves around the bands to work our glutes, thighs, and hamstrings—a series that will leave you spanking out the lactic acid in your legs.

Just when your legs reach the last frontier of fatigue, the instructor (ours was Jess Klein) tells you to release your bands and 20 minutes of ecstatic dance cardio begins. After so much seat and leg work, it feels insanely good to rock out to Kayne, Coldplay, and Jay-Z.

And Anderson keeps the choreography relatively straightforward in the bands class, meaning it’s an easier routine to follow.

Who’s it for: Pilates-mat fans looking for new challenges, those who like a side of fitness glamour with their strength-training, dance cardio junkies, and music-motivates-you types
