Class Action: Speedball with Steve Feinberg

Steve leading his signature Speedball workout.

Wearing a doo rag, instructing to the tune of his hip-hop and techno filled playlist, and bouncing throughout the studio, if Steve Feinberg is one thing as a trainer, he’s energetic.

And during 45-minutes of heart-pounding, sweat-inducing cardio, you’ll be thankful for his enthusiasm.

Feinberg created his patented Speedball method in 2005, which has since developed a cult following and expanded into varieties like Speedball Core, Speedcycle, Speedball Strength, and more. Picking up on the trend, Equinox now offers the workout and its offshoots at  locations across the city.

The original Speedball workout in question revolves around, you guessed it, a medicine ball, so be sure to choose a weight you’re comfortable with. The class includes four core moves of different arm rotations—think circles, jabs, and pendulums (swinging your arms side to side)—and leg lunges to the front, back, and sides.

With only four fundamental moves that follow the rhythm of the music, which includes “Barbara Streisand” by Duck Sauce and “Hello” by Martin Solveig and Dragonette, Feinberg makes it easy for his clients to follow along his instructions.

But the routines and pace are constantly changing, so if Feinberg isn’t keeping you entertained, which is unlikely, the exercises aren’t likely to bore you. When a stretch and water break comes in the middle of class, you’ll be surprised by how much time has gone by (but also thankful for the chance to catch your breath).

By the end of the class, which is filled mostly with women, you’ll leave feeling sweaty and a bit drained but nonetheless empowered. And if you quickly forget how hard you worked, you’re sure to feel it in your arms, butt, and thighs the next day.

Who’s it for: Those who like a dance cardio vibe but aren’t very coordinated; those who want toning and definition along with their cardio.

At Equinox gyms in New York and other locations worldwide.
