Swanand Yoga officially opened its doors last week, just south of Penn Station in Chelsea. And instead of embracing the city’s love affair with any variation on a fast-paced Vinyasa flow, the studio is offering slow, spiritually-centered Hatha classes in candelit rooms.
We stopped by for Hatha Level I & II with Netri (Patrizia Palazzolo). The class was quiet, slow, and focused, and during the asana portion, Netri circled the room offering expert cues and corrections. After the poses, there was a sequence of Kapalabhati (Skull Shining Breath), a short meditation, and some brief chanting. And Savasana was so long, I felt like I’d taken an early evening nap.
Overall, the class left me feeling cool, calm, and collected, but I was slightly bored (yes, I realize the point of yoga is not to entertain me) and never broke a sweat.
