They Got The Beat: Yoga instructors whose mantra is music

2 of 9
Derek Beres
DJ and founder of EarthRise SoundSystems

Beres was one of the first instructors on the New York scene to really prioritize music in yoga classes. By DJing classes and often remixing internationally recognized artists, Beres, now based in Los Angeles, never shied away from beats with serious bass in class. (Thank you!)

“Before class I might be playing A Tribe Called Quest or Tinariwen. “During… I often focus on Middle Eastern music. I take every playlist I make seriously—in a fun way.”

By banning iPod shuffle, Beres really set a trend for creating a tonal and mood consistency from song to song in class.

“In a yoga class, the prime focus might be the asanas,” says Beres. “But the music is carrying everything along.”
